How do I create a 360 degree QuickTime™ VR file with my Canon Digital Camera and Canon PhotoStitch?

This document will assist you in creating panoramic 360 degree images from the PhotoStitch program, with images acquired from your digital camera. With the stitched image you will be able to pan and view through 360 degrees in Apple QuickTime™. This feature is useful where you want to portray a 360 degree landscape panorama, or a 360 degree revolving snapshot of a room.

You will need to have QuickTime™ version 3 or later installed on your system as well as PhotoStitch. You can download QuickTime™ from the Apple website –
http://www.apple.com/QuickTime

PhotoStitch is also located on the solution disk that was shipped with your digital camera.

There are three phases for this process.

  1. Taking photo’s with your digital camera.
  2. Importing, stitching, and selecting the QuickTime™ VR format through PhotoStitch.
  3. Opening and viewing by panning in QuickTime™.
  • Phase 1: Taking photo’s with your digital camera.

Please refer to your camera’s user guide for the first phase – refer to ‘Stitch Assist Mode’ in the Index.

    1. Set your camera to ‘Stitch Assist mode’.
    2. Select the shooting Sequence, depending on your desired stitch option.
    3. Take first image. (You can use a tripod to help stabilize the image vertically for all the desired shots)
    4. Compose and take the second image so it overlaps the first by about 30-50%.
    5. Continue this procedure to shoot the remaining images. Press Set when you have taken the required shots to complete the 360 degree pan.
    6. Download the images to your computer in the usual way, via Canon Zoombrowser, and make a note of the location where they were downloaded to, together with the image filenames.

  • Phase 2: Importing, stitching, and selecting the QuickTime™ VR format through PhotoStitch.

    1. Open PhotoStitch from the Programs menu in Windows. Start > All programs > Canon Utilities > PhotoStitch 3.1 > PhotoStitch.
    2. Click on PhotoStitch.
    3. Click on the ‘Open’ Icon.
    4. Browse to where the images are located on your computer. Hold the CTRL key down on your keyboard whilst clicking on all the files that will make up the 360 degree photo-stitch. Once all the images are selected click on ‘Open’.
    5. Click on ‘Arrange’, then select ‘360 Degrees’.
    6. Click on the ‘Merge’ tab, then click ‘Start’. Photostitch will now arrange the images.
    7. Click on the ‘Save’ tab, then click on the ‘Save’ button.
    8. Once you have selected the location under ‘Save in:’, type in a file name and ensure that ‘Save as type:’ is set to ‘QuickTime™ VR (*.mov)’. Finally, click on the ‘Save’ Button.

    9. The images will then be merged and saved as a QuickTime™ VR file. Click on ‘Yes’ to view the Saved Image.

  • Phase 3: Open and viewing by panning in QuickTime™.
    1. If the image is not already opened via PhotoStitch, you can open it by double-clicking the saved file on your computer.

    2. To pan around and view the image through 360 degrees, place the cursor on the screen, hold down the left mouse button, and move the mouse in the direction that you wish to pan.
